Planning your day at Versailles

The palace is visited on a timed slot booked in advance. Arriving late means losing your ticket, which is the main reason a direct transfer with no train change earns its keep on a weekday morning when the A13 is busy.

Drop-off is on the Place d'Armes, facing the main entrance. From the Versailles-Château Rive Gauche station there is a further ten-minute walk — trivial in fine weather, less pleasant in the rain or with children.

The estate is large: the Grand Trianon and the Queen's Hamlet are more than a kilometre from the palace itself. If your visit starts there, say so when booking, as access is through a different gate.

The RER C runs directly to Versailles-Château Rive Gauche for about €4 from Paris, in roughly forty minutes. It is by far the cheapest option and works perfectly if you are one or two people with a flexible schedule.
